Multi-Level Explanation

Multi-level explanation is the view that understanding and discovery operate at several legitimate levels — and that the flow of insight is not always from particles upward.

Historically, higher-level regularities are often found first; lower-level mechanisms are inferred later:

• Thermodynamics before statistical mechanics.
• Mendelian genetics before molecular genetics.
• Ecological patterns before underlying mechanisms.

What this claims

• Some phenomena can only be observed and reasoned about at a higher level.
• Some lower-level principles are discovered through higher-level observation — explanation does not always flow upward from the smallest parts.
• Lower levels still ground higher levels ontologically (emergent physicalism); the claim is about epistemic access and explanatory order, not about escaping physics.

Tiers are not a promise that “deeper is always better.” A tier-2+ claim may be the right level to state, test, or revise a pattern — while remaining linked downward to captures and to Rᶜ / Rⁿ.
