Emergent Physicalism

Emergent physicalism is the author’s metaphysical stance: everything ultimately depends on lower-level entities, interactions, and physical law, but higher-level structures — relationships, organization, history, information flow — are genuine features of the world, not illusions.

A hurricane is entirely constituted by molecules of air and water; nobody predicts hurricanes by tracking each molecule. The pattern is real and a legitimate object of study.

What this claims

• Emergent phenomena are not supernatural or independent of physics.
• They are not always usefully describable at the lowest level — the higher-level description captures structure that is invisible or impractical at the particle level.
• Individual parts still influence the whole; complex systems are not sealed from their components.

What this is not

• Strong reductionism — higher-level sciences are not eliminable in principle or in practice.
• Traditional holism — the whole as a mysterious substance unrelated to parts (not the same as emergent entities)
• Undifferentiated holism — treating all revision as one inseparable web with no entity boundaries
