Vote on Physics

Democratic or consensus process applied where a knowable answer already exists — sanctifying ignorance

Principle violated

Democratic bind buys acceptance under genuine uncertainty — not truth on D-F questions where derivation or transparent chain suffices.

Vote on physics is theatre at the legitimacy layer: a workshop, consensus session, or democratic bind on a question that is D-F — knowable by derivation, invariant proof, or published measurement — because stakeholders lack access to the chain (false uncertainty) or because politics feels safer than publishing the answer.

Involvement is not vote on physics; it is standing, contest path, and recorded trade-offs when values legitimately differ after evidence is shared (art. 34).

The failure

  • Majority ignorance substitutes for transparent derivation — train position from speed × time, accounting identity, dose calculation
  • Democratic fairness at the wrong layer — lives depend on outcome, so a vote is convened, but no amount of equal voice converts opinion into position (art. 34 — Rogers train example)
  • Process inflation — collective machinery where access and education would suffice

vs legitimate democracy

Vote on physicsLegitimate democracy
UncertaintyFalse — answer knowableGenuine — or cost/values contested after evidence
Task natureD-FP or legitimacy conflict
FixPublish chain, designate evidenceEqual voice, pre-committed threshold, dissent on record
  • Credential theatre — badge on knowable work
  • Compliance theatre — consensus workshop because conflict is uncomfortable
  • Art. 19 — substituting vote for derivation at D-F execution

Counter direction

Classify first (art. 19). If D-F, use derivation and publish evidence and derivation. If empirical knowledge is settled — outcomes foreseeable with high probability on a long horizon once evidence is shared — obligation to publish rises, not obligation to average opinions. Reserve democratic bind for genuine uncertainty and contested cost allocation after understanding (art. 35).
