Growth is the aim that speed and scale do not require sacrificing the record — new capabilities arrive as forward commits and new domains, not as silent rewrites, shared-table shortcuts, or metric games that hide structural debt.
The aim
Organisations that confuse growth with exemption from principles accumulate invisible corruption: mutable history, diffuse writers, KPIs that substitute for outcomes. Sustainable growth treats schema evolution, domain splits, and platform extraction as committed architectural acts — documented, traceable, reversible only by new commits.
Growth without coherence is merely acceleration toward audit failure.
In software systems
Growing systems add writers and domains rather than coordination pairs. Event schemas evolve through versioned commits; projections rebuild; no team writes directly to another domain’s governed facts “just for this release.”
In human organisations
Growing organisations localise authority so teams can reconfigure what they fully own. Cross-domain growth uses explicit saga-style coordination — not permanent global gates or shadow processes that bypass the record.
In socio-technical systems
Growth aligns org structure with architecture deliberately. Platform teams publish fast, reliable committed decisions so product teams can proceed through Phase 1 without synchronous coupling (Article 19).
What threatens this aim
Failure modes: Mutable history destroys the foundation evolution requires — you cannot safely extend a system whose past is negotiable. Silent override trades long-term growth for short-term unrecorded fixes.
Dark patterns: Metric substitution optimises dashboards while structural health deteriorates — growth appears on slides while invariants erode.
Anti-patterns: Diffuse write authority makes every feature addition a coordination tax that compounds with scale.
Principled support: Immutable events, single writers, and commitment boundaries are what make growth evolvable rather than fragile.
