Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827) formulated classical determinism and probability theory. We cite the demon thought experiment as a conditional we accept in principle — not as a blueprint for capture architecture.
What we cite (in principle)
- Given complete knowledge of every state and every law of physics, and infinite computational capacity, deducing the future from the present is possible in principle.
- That conditional clarifies Rᶜ — contingent Real knowable through experience — without pretending capture can ever close the loop in practice.
What we do not adopt (architecture)
- No total ledger = complete Real. A capture system that records everything must also record its own updates — it is part of the universe it tracks. Self-referential capture creates a loop the ledger cannot outrun.
- No mode-neutral omniscience. Every measurement alters what is measured; the observer is inside the system. Residual uncertainty, incomplete O1, and fallible formalisation remain — alongside Gödelian limits on formal closure.
The demon is a limit ideal, not a straw man — and not an implementable design.
